What can I safely check before calling?

Set the thermostat to Cool and lower than room temperature. Make sure Fan is on Auto; an On setting can circulate room-temperature air between cooling cycles. Replace a visibly clogged filter with the correct size and airflow direction.

Check the labeled HVAC breaker once. If it trips again, leave it off. Repeated resetting can damage equipment or conceal an electrical fault.

  • Thermostat on Cool and Fan on Auto
  • Clean, correctly sized filter
  • Supply vents open and return grille unobstructed
  • Outdoor disconnect and breaker left alone after a repeat trip

Why is ice forming on the refrigerant line?

Ice usually means the indoor coil is below freezing because airflow is restricted or refrigerant conditions are abnormal. Turn cooling off and let the fan run only if there is no electrical smell or water risk.

Do not chip ice from the coil. A technician should inspect the filter, blower, coil, metering device and refrigerant circuit after thawing. Refrigerant does not get used up; low charge points to a leak or an earlier charging error.

Could a capacitor cause warm air?

Yes. Florida heat is hard on capacitors, which help motors start and run. A failed part may leave the outdoor fan or compressor unable to start, sometimes with humming or repeated clicking.

Capacitors hold an electrical charge even when power is off. This is not a safe DIY repair. A licensed technician can test the component and determine whether another motor or voltage problem caused the failure.

When should I stop troubleshooting?

Stop when the breaker retrips, the system smells hot, water threatens a ceiling, the outdoor unit will not run, or ice returns after the filter is corrected. Also stop if anyone in the home is medically vulnerable to heat.

Ask the technician for the measured cause, repair price and any warranty coverage. If a major component is condemned, request the failed reading and consider a second opinion before replacement.

How can I prevent another cooling failure?

Schedule maintenance before the long cooling season, ideally in March or April. Keep the outdoor coil clear of debris, change filters based on actual loading and keep condensate treatment appropriate for the system.

Maintenance cannot prevent every capacitor or control failure, but it can identify weak electrical readings, restricted coils and drain problems before peak summer demand.
