Repair vs Replace Your AC in Florida

When is AC repair the better choice?
Repair usually makes sense when the system is otherwise reliable, the diagnosis is specific and the cost is modest relative to replacement. A capacitor, contactor, drain blockage or small control problem does not automatically justify new equipment.
Ask whether the repair addresses the root cause and whether parts or labor are covered. A second opinion is reasonable if the proposed work is large or the diagnosis is based only on age.
What do the 10-year and 15-year rules mean?
Ten years is a useful point to weigh efficiency, warranty and future risk more carefully; fifteen years is a common late-life range in Florida’s demanding climate. Neither birthday means the system must be replaced.
Coastal corrosion, long runtimes, installation quality and maintenance can matter more than the calendar. Review service history and present condition.
How does the 50% repair rule work?
If a repair approaches 50% of the installed cost of an appropriate replacement, replacement becomes easier to justify—especially on an older, unreliable system. The comparison must use real written prices, not a vague sales estimate.
Also consider what remains after repair. Replacing one major component does not renew the rest of the system or ducts.
Does refrigerant type affect the decision?
Older R22 systems can be costly to repair because the refrigerant is phased out of new production and major components are aging. A leak should be located rather than repeatedly topped off.
Newer refrigerant transitions also require matched equipment and trained handling. Do not approve a replacement based on a frightening refrigerant claim without model-specific explanation.
What should I compare before deciding?
Compare the repair’s expected life, current warranty, comfort problems, energy use, duct condition and replacement scope. Request both options when practical.
Avoid making a five-figure decision from star ratings alone. A clear diagnosis and complete written estimate are more useful than urgency or brand prestige.
